2 Steelers Could Potentially See The Harsh Reality Of The NFL Because Of Pittsburgh’s Draft Strategy
Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

The Pittsburgh Steelers have just wrapped up the 2024 NFL Draft, which has garnered widespread acclaim from pundits across the league. With promising new players ready to hit the field and significant offseason acquisitions, optimism is high.

However, not everyone shares the enthusiasm. David Todd, a former member of the Pittsburgh media, disclosed on Monday that the Steelers have two players currently on the roster who may not have fared well in the draft. He contended that Cole Holcomb and Nate Herbig didn't see significant benefits from the selections made. In fact, Todd revealed that they may have lost their jobs because of how the Steelers drafted.

The Steelers enjoyed a stellar draft, capturing the attention of many observers. They kicked off proceedings by snagging offensive tackle Troy Fautanu, a surprising pick given his projected unavailability at their draft position. Adding to the excitement, they landed center Zach Frazier, followed by the versatile Mason McCormick, who boasts skills across the offensive line, with a focus on left guard.

However, Todd suggests that the selection of McCormick may signal trouble for Herbig, who's still vying for a consistent roster spot after starting just two games in 2023. Todd advocates for the Steelers to consider releasing Herbig post-June 1st to ease financial burdens.

On a more somber note for the Steelers, Holcomb, who was enjoying a standout season until sidelined by a severe injury, faces an uncertain return timeline. Despite optimism, the team's signing of linebacker Patrick Queen and drafting of Payton Wilson could spell a challenging scenario for Holcomb. Todd proposes that, regrettably, an injury settlement might be the prudent business move, much to the dismay of Steelers fans rooting for Holcomb's recovery efforts.

If anyone's job was more precarious, it would undoubtedly be Herbig's. Yet, indications suggest that the Steelers recognize some value in him as a depth player and may opt to retain him. Regarding Holcomb, there appears to be a greater likelihood that the Steelers will prioritize his recovery before making any definitive decisions. Nevertheless, the NFL operates as a business, requiring tough decisions. Todd's assertion about the potential setbacks for these two players due to the Steelers' draft choices holds merit, albeit not guaranteeing their outcomes.

Steelers Outlook On 2024 Season Gaining Momentum

The Steelers' journey through the 2023 season was a rollercoaster of highs and lows. From the depths of a three-game losing streak in December to the surge led by Mason Rudolph that propelled them into the playoffs, emotions were in constant flux. Post-season reflections from the organization revealed dissatisfaction with the status quo, particularly given the playoff drought since the 2016 season, igniting a fervent desire to break the spell.

In response, Omar Khan and his team launched into action, aggressively reinforcing the roster. The addition of Queen and other impactful players, alongside a complete overhaul of the quarterback position, demonstrated a bold commitment to success. With all cards on the table, the Steelers are primed for a resurgence, infusing fans with excitement and anticipation for the upcoming 2024 season.

As the dust settles from the draft and new faces prepare to integrate into the team, expectations soar to new heights. Steelers fans eagerly await the unfolding impact of these offseason maneuvers. Many are hopeful that Holcomb can make a full recovery and get back on the field for the Steelers in 2024 as well.
